10 Things you might not know about Tequila:
1 Origin: Tequila is named after the town of Tequila in the Mexican state of Jalisco, where it originated. 2006 the town and its surrounding area were declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.
2 First Distillation: Spanish settlers' first known distillation of tequila occurred in the 16th century.
3 Agave Plant: Tequila is made from the blue agave plant, specifically Agave tequilana.
4 Mezcal vs. Tequila: Tequila is a type of mezcal, but not all mezcal is tequila. Mezcal can be made from various types of agave, while tequila must be made from blue agave.
5 Regulations: To be legally called tequila, a spirit must be produced in specific regions of Mexico, primarily in Jalisco and parts of four other states.
6 Aging: There are different types of tequila-based on ageing: Blanco (unaged), Reposado (aged 2-12 months), Añejo (aged 1-3 years), and Extra Añejo (aged over 3 years).
7 Tequila Worm: Contrary to popular belief, the worm found in some mezcal bottles is not found in tequila bottles. The worm is actually a marketing gimmick for mezcal.
8 Calories: Tequila is lower in calories than other spirits, with approximately 64 calories per shot.
9 Health Benefits: Some studies suggest that the natural sugars in tequila, called agavins, may aid digestion and weight loss.
